Why Is My Brand New Computer So Slow?
I hope you are reading this before purchasing a new desktop or laptop. It’s a little piece of very important information.
There is a lot to know before purchasing the computer you will most likely use for the next 5 years or so.
By the way, once a computer is 5 years old, even if it’s running well, it’s considered a dinosaur! Technology just moves so fast!
Buying a new computer is exciting and daunting. There are just SO many choices!
Many of our clients have expressed their disappointment in how slow their new computer is or how quickly it slows down.
The reason this issue shows up so frequently in a new computer is that it was sold without enough RAM (memory).
For example, the most recent upgrade is Windows 10 Version 21H1.
In our experience, we find that most computers bought off the shelves of stores are not updated with the latest security patches or versions of the operating system.
Once you get the computer home and update it over a few months, including all of the updates for the software on the computer (much of which you do not need and will never use) and any hardware updates, you have now overloaded the RAM. It just can’t keep up with all of the background processes and new additions to its operating system.
And, currently Windows is planning for Windows 11!
Microsoft recommends 2GB of RAM to run Windows 10
Sure if you only want to look at Windows 10 on your computer and not do anything – no games, no office products, no anti-virus, etc.
In our experience, anyone using Window 10 with less than 12GB of RAM are unsatisfied.
16GB is better and provides a more satisfying experience. It also allows for some expansion into the future of updates and upgrades.
So, with Windows 11 coming, we suspect that 16GB of RAM is going to be the minimum that you’ll want to have in your system to provide expansion and a quick, responsive system.
Microsoft recommends 4GB of RAM to run Windows 11
Yes, of course, there are other reasons for a slow computer:
· Older CPU (processor) – YES, they are selling systems with older hardware
· Virus
· Spyware/Malware
· Junk programs
· Apps that come with the system that you will never use
· Apps that come with the operating system that you’ll never use
· Hard drives that are malfunctioning
· And more…
